Newfoundland author featured on cover of New York Times Book Review

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is pleased to offer congratulations to Newfoundland author Wayne Johnston, on his appearance on the cover of the prestigious New York Times Book Review. The cover and accompanying article feature Johnston's book The Colony of Unrequited Dreams, a fictitious biographical novel about the late Joseph R. Smallwood.

"I am delighted to offer Mr. Johnston my congratulations on this remarkable acknowledgment of his talented work. He is one of only three Canadians ever to grace the cover of this U.S. publication, and indeed the first Newfoundlander," said Furey. "How appropriate that this book about the first premier of our province, should receive such recognition during the summer when we are celebrating our 50th anniversary of Confederation with Canada. It is a great honour for Mr. Johnston, and a great honour for Newfoundland and Labrador."

The Colony of Unrequited Dreams is featured on the July 25, 1999 edition of the Review, and can be found on the Internet at //www.nytimes.com/books/99/07/25.
