Getting the Message Across
Celebrating 133 Years of Transatlantic Cable Communications at Heart's Content Cable
Station Provincial Historic Site, Tuesday, July 27
When the first successful Transatlantic Cable landed at Heart's Content on
July 27, 1866, international communications were revolutionized. For the first time in
history, information could be quickly sent across the Atlantic.
EVENTS SCHEDULED FOR JULY 27 INCLUDE:
At 2:00 p.m., Barbara Barrett will read from her great uncle's
unpublished letters, The Life and Times of Samuel Scott Bailey, the first known
Newfoundlander to work for the New York, Newfoundland and London Telegraph Company.
Claude Hobbs, the station's last assistant superintendent, will present
a talk entitled A Brief History of the Heart's Content Cable Station.
Author Donald Tarrant will launch his new publication Atlantic Sentinel,
a description of Newfoundland's role in Transatlantic communications.
The site also has permanent exhibits and models of the famous cable-laying
ship, the Great Eastern. Tours are offered daily. Musical entertainment and refreshments
will be available all day July 27.

Open daily from June 19 to October 1, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
ADMISSION
Free admission on July 27, 1999. Regularly $2.50. Group rates available. Always free for
children 12 years and under.
