(Tourism, Culture and Recreation)

The following is being distributed at the request of Encounters With Canada:

In celebration of Newfoundland and Labrador's 50th Anniversary of Confederation with Canada, and in conjunction with Soiree '99, Encounters With Canada will be offering a week of its program in St. John's, from May 16 to May 22.

Encounters With Canada is the largest national youth program of its kind, and this event represents a milestone, as it is the first time that the program will be offered outside of Ottawa.

An initiative of the Council for Canadian Unity, a non-profit organization, Encounters With Canada introduces Canada's capital to more than 3,000 students each year. Encounters With Canada is dedicated to promoting a strong sense of national unity and encourages leadership qualities within Canada's youth.

The program, which this year will welcome its 50,000th participant, has been privileged in the past to receive exceptional speakers such as H.R.H. Prince Charles, the Right Honourable Jean Chretien, and international pop star Alanis Morissette.

For more information on Encounters With Canada, please contact:

Denis LaBossiere, Director, or Gail S. Smith, Communications, at 1-800-361-0419 or: Roger Samson, Youth Co-ordinator, Soiree '99, (709) 729-4406.
