Annual Arts and Letters Competition begins

Charles Furey, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that the Provincial Arts and Letters Competition is now receiving submissions for the 1999 awards.

"This competition encourages and stimulates the creative talents of both amateur and professional artists who are residents of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Furey. "Since its inception in 1952, we have received tens of thousands of submissions. An increased number of entries over the past years indicates that interest in the program is growing."

Each applicant is required to submit his/her creative piece to either the senior or junior divisions of the competition. The senior (19 years or older) division categories are poetry; short fiction (Max. 5000 words); non fictional prose (Max. 5000 words); dramatic script; musical composition; photography; painting; drawing and printmaking; and three dimensional art. The junior (12 to 18 years) division consists of three categories: prose; poetry; and visual art.

The prizes in the senior division are $600; $300; and $150 for first, second and third. The prizes in the junior (E.J. Pratt) division are $300; $200; $100 for first, second and third.
