Modified snaring and trapping area expanded

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, advises hunters and trappers in the Charlottetown enclave area, effective immediately, they are required to use modified snaring and trapping techniques.

These techniques, which reduce accidental captures of marten, have been developed as part of the department's continuing commitment to protect the endangered Newfoundland Pine Marten.

"The marten, when caught in these snares have the ability to twist themselves free, while other animals remained snared," Minister Aylward explained. "These techniques have been developed with the preservation of the marten in mind while trying to preserve the activities of the trapping and snaring public."

Further information on the Modified Snaring/Trapping Program can be found in the 1999-2000 Hunting Guide, the Trappers Update, or by contacting your nearest Wildlife Office.
