The following is being distributed at the request of 37 Canadian Brigade Group, Land Forces Atlantic Area:

NOTE TO EDITORS:

Soldiers to practice winter survival skills;media invited to participate

From March 19-21, approximately 40 soldiers from St. John's will travel to Labrador to test their ability to deploy across Newfoundland and Labrador in winter conditions. The exercise, named STALWART VIKING, is part of preparations for Operation ABACUS, the Canadian Forces contingency plan to assist Canadians in the event of problems resulting from the Year 2000 problem.

Soldiers from the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, 56 Field Engineer Squadron, 36 Service Battalion and 728 Communications Squadron will fly to Goose Bay and deploy by helicopter to a training area approximately 10 kilometres north of that Labrador community. They will practice winter survival skills before returning to St. John's. The exercise will also involve helicopters and air crew from 403 Squadron (Gagetown, N.B.) and 444 Squadron (Goose Bay).

Representatives of the media are invited to attend this exercise. Provision has been made for reporters and camera crew to accompany the soldiers from departure in St. John's to the return home, including transport by aircraft to the exercise area. A tent group, with the necessary supplies, equipment and clothing as well as assistance from soldiers, has been allocated for use by the media in order to maximize their ability to attend the training.

Space is limited. Media representatives interested in attending the exercise should contact Lieutenant Ed Hollett as quickly as possible to make the necessary arrangements.

Media contact: Lieutenant Ed Hollett, (709) 685-0520.
