Premier Tobin pleased with social union agreement Premier Brian Tobin said today's agreement on social union and the reinvestment in health care by the federal government, nine provinces and two territories goes a long way in enabling Newfoundland and Labrador to secure major new funding in health care. "We now have a firm commitment from the Prime Minister that the federal budget this month will contain a major restoration of federal dollars for the health care system of Canada," said Premier Tobin. "I have always said that the health care problem is a national problem that demands a national solution. Newfoundland and Labrador could not go it alone. Today's agreement will see the provinces and Ottawa working together again to save our Canadian medicare system," said Premier Tobin. In light of new federal health care transfers announced by the Prime Minister today, the provincial government, in its spring budget, will be able to commit to new funding for the province's health care boards. "I have been listening to concerns of nurses and other health care professionals and after today's successful negotiations government will be able to respond with meaningful new initiatives." Premier Tobin thanked all provincial and territorial health care ministers, including Minister Joan Marie Aylward, who has led the negotiations on this important subject for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians during the last two years.
