The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador received the following message last night from the Gander Area Control Centre, from the papal aircraft identified as "Shepherd One" as it flew over Newfoundland and Labrador in the early morning hours of January 28.

"As I return to Rome from my trip to Mexico and the United States, I renew my good wishes to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, asking Almighty God to bestow His abundance of gifts, harmony, justice and peace, and God bless you all." - His Holiness, Pope John Paul II
