Attractions Canada officially launches its national awards contest

For the past two years now, Attractions Canada has been showcasing Canada's numerous points of interest in an effort to encourage all Canadians to discover their country. Proud of the many "finds" the program has featured over the past few years, the representatives of Attractions Canada now intend to recognize the matchless quality of a multitude of little-known Canadian attractions.

The contest being launched today involves Canadian attractions at all levels - municipal, provincial and national.

"In Canada, there's no major national convention for the representatives of Canadian attractions, and we feel it's imperative to hold an annual event to promote the high calibre of those attractions," emphasized Stephane Cherpit, vice president of business development with Attractions Canada.

We have several partners in this venture, all of which have long been working to promote Canada's "hidden treasures". The Canadian Tourism Commission, the National Capital Commission, Canadian Heritage and the Tourism Industry Association of Canada are all pleased to be associated with the event, which will take place in Montreal in the spring of 1999.

Before prizes are awarded to the national winners in the six categories involved, each province must provide a list of its own winners. At the awards gala, a total of 72 attractions will therefore receive Attractions Canada recognition, and six of these will be presented with the Attractions Canada Grand Prize.

The success of the event will depend on cooperation from everyone involved, so as to ensure that there are finalists in all categories. These categories are: outdoor sites, indoor sites, cultural events, sports events, new attractions, and international attractions (all categories). The finalists and national winners will gain heightened visibility provincially, nationally and internationally.

"The contest represents a unique opportunity to meet other people in the field and gain a higher profile. We are proud that this event will provide, not only a meeting place, but an annual celebration of the numerous `hidden treasures' Canada has to offer," said Mr. Cherpit.
