Province's outdoor experiences profiled

Newfoundland and Labrador's range of outdoor experiences and tourism products continue to be profiled in national and international markets, says Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Sandra Kelly.

"Our province continues to be featured in outdoor adventure television programming, or in commercial ventures that use our unique land and seascapes as their setting," the minister said.

One of the latest commercial enterprises to photograph their products in a Newfoundland and Labrador setting is Old Town Canoe Company, of Old Town, Maine. Old Town Canoe is the largest and oldest manufacturer of canoes in the world, along with a range of kayaks and

outdoor gear. Old Town's parent company is Johnson Worldwide, one of the world's largest suppliers of outdoor gear.

"Old Town Canoe shot many of the images for their 1999 catalogue in western Newfoundland, and around Little Bay Islands, and the catalogue shows some incredible photographs of sea kayaking along dramatic icebergs and coastline," the minister said. "The back cover photograph is a stunning aerial shot of a trio of kayakers with a spectacular iceberg setting."

Marble Mountain Cabins in Steady Brook was an integral participant in the Old Town Canoe shoot, and Marble Mountain Cabins owner Joe Dicks says the catalogue project has opened a number of doors for Newfoundland and Labrador's outdoor experiences.

"Old Town Canoe is a major participant in North American outdoor shows, and this year the backdrop of their convention booth features an outstanding Newfoundland and Labrador iceberg photo with a kayaker in the foreground," Dicks says. "They are advising their customers that `this is the exotic site we use to test our equipment'."

Dicks adds that the Old Town Canoe catalogue itself is a great promotional tool for the province, with about 260,000 copies in circulation.

The catalogue acknowledges the Newfoundland setting, and encourages prospective kayakers and canoeists to contact the provincial tourism department for information on such adventures in the province.

Another superb profile of a provincial adventure tourism experience is being broadcast this week on the Life Network, as "The Great Outdoorsman" profiles whale and iceberg watching through the sea kayaking experiences of Wilderness Newfoundland Adventures.

The program was shot in Notre Dame Bay last July, and Stan Cook of Wilderness Newfoundland Adventures says the shoot encountered great weather and an exciting array of whales and icebergs.

"This program has given our product and our province incredible national and international exposure," Cook says, adding that the piece will also be picked up by other specialty channels.

The Life Network program began airing on October 26 at 12 noon and will run several times throughout the week.

"We have a unique range of experiences in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the opportunities for ongoing tourism development are emerging every year," Minister Kelly added. "The awareness generated through these programs and promotional campaigns helps foster an excellent image of our tourism products."
