Major sponsor announced for 1999 Corner Brook Canada Winter Games

Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister Sandra Kelly, today welcomed another member to the family of supporters for the 1999 Canada Winter Games, with the announcement of "Tim-Br Mart" as a major sponsor for next year's event to be held in Corner Brook between February 20 and March 6.

Tim-Br Mart is one of Canada's largest building supply and hardware purchasing entities, and has committed to provide in excess of $300,000 worth of financial support and in-kind materials for the games. John MacDougall, president of "AWARD: The Marketing Group," which is the Atlantic Canadian arm of Tim-Br Mart, represented the new major sponsor at the announcement in St. John's.

"It's not too often you see a building materials buying group come forward to support major athletic events," Kelly said. "But such is the wide range of support the 1999 Canada Games are attracting, bringing the best of our nation's corporate citizens to this major national event."

Tim-Br Mart affiliations can be found in 35 locations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, and in over 60 more towns and cities throughout Atlantic Canada.

"These family-owned businesses are at the heart of a community's development, from major civic projects, to the hopes and dreams of young families building that first home," the minister added.

J. Wayne Trask, President of the 1999 Canada Winter Games Host Society, welcomed Tim-Br Mart as not only a member of the family of major sponsors, but also as the official supplier of building supplies and materials for the games.

"Rarely do you see a building supplier as a sponsor for an athletic event such as this, but Tim-Br Mart and our organization are very similar in structure," Trask said. "We both realize the importance of the community, and build on that relationship."

"There are now more than a dozen major sponsors and official suppliers who have come forward to generously support the 1999 Canada Winter Games, and we anticipate that more will follow these leading business entities," Kelly added. She commended the 1999 Canada Winter Games Host Society for their endeavours in continuing to attract such committed and generous sponsors to the 1999 Games.

"It underscores the fact the host society has an outstanding event in store for all of Canada next February," the minister added.
