Newfoundland and Labrador Mission Staff announced for 1999 Canada Winter Games

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced today the names of the individuals who will comprise the Newfoundland and Labrador Mission Staff for the 1999 Canada Winter Games, being held in Corner Brook from February 20 to March 6, 1999.

Heading up the 19 person team will be Jim Tee as chef de mission and Patti Thorne and Glen Littlejohn as assistant chefs de mission. Other members of the mission staff include: Mac Blundon, Terry Mosher, Trevor Paine, Clayton Welsh, David Doyle, Michelle Healey, Tony Flood, Jill Brewer, Christine Moores, Jennifer Dolomount, Frazer Russell, Doug Fowler, Joni Burry, Dave Feener,Vic Janes and Tom Godden.

The mission staff role is to provide the necessary logistical support and guidance to approximately 300 Newfoundland and Labrador athletes and coaches as they prepare for one of the premier amateur sporting events in Canada.

"We are very fortunate to have such an experienced group of individuals leading our athletes," Minister Kelly said. "All of the mission staff have extensive backgrounds in sport and recreation and most have had previous Canada Games experience either as an athlete, coach or manager."

Over the next several months the mission staff will help coordinate numerous games projects as the athletes prepare for this sporting and cultural event. In addition each mission staff member will be assigned particular sports to liaise with, prior to and during the actual games competition.

"This is the first ever Canada Winter Games to be hosted in Newfoundland and Labrador," noted the minister. "We are extremely proud to host a sporting event of this magnitude and it certainly provides us with an excellent opportunity to showcase our great province to the rest of the country."

The games are expected to attract more than 3,500 athletes, coaches and managers along with thousands of visitors to the Corner Brook area. Attached is a list of mission staff members and a brief bio on each member.

Mission Staff

Jim Tee - Mount Pearl

Chef de Mission - Acting Director, Recreation and Sport Division, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Chef de Mission for the 1993, 1995, 1997 Canada Games.

Patti Thorne - St. John's

Recreation and Sport Consultant, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation and responsible for National Coaching Certification Program. Mission Staff member at the 1987 and 1997 Canada Games. Past Technical Director with Badminton.

Glenn Littlejohn - Bay Roberts

Recreation and Sport Consultant, Department of Tourism,Culture and Recreation. Attended the 1981 Canada Games as an athlete, the 1989 Games as coach of the Province Female Softball Team and was a Member of the Mission Staff for the 1993 Games.

Vic Janes - Manuels

Executive Director of Special Celebrations for the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation - Former Director of Recreation and Sport Division. Assistant Chef de Mission - 1997 Canada Games and a member of the Management Committee for the 1999 Canada Winter Games.

Tom Godden - St. John's

Program Officer - Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission. Coached Gymnastics - 1983 Games and served as Assistant Chef de Mission - 1993 amd 1995 Games

Dave Feener - Mount Pearl

Recreation and Sport Consultant, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Coached Women's Softball team - 1997 Canada Games

Joni Burry - Mount Pearl

Performance Improvement Manager, Harvey's Travel. Attended the 1983, 1987 and 1991 Canada Games with Synchronized Swimming.

Doug Fowler - St. John's

Retired Teacher. Attended the Canada Games experiences as coach in Boxing 1987-1991-1995. Director with Canadian Amateur Boxing Association and President of Boxing Newfoundland 1992-1998.

Christine Moores - Harbour Grace

President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Figure Skating Association. Eastern Regional Director NLFSA and also Director of the Canadian Figure Skating Association Background and experience in local development with the Conception Bay North Figure Skating Club.

Jill Brewer - St. John's

Interim Executive Director of the St. John's Civic Centre Corporation. Former Diving Coach at the 1983, 1995, and 1997 Canada Games.

Tony Flood - Mount Pearl

Physical Education Teacher at Holy Spirit School. Coach of Baseball in 1989 - 1993 and 1997 at Canada Games and former mission staff member in 1991. Extensive background in coaching at local, regional, provincial, national and international level in baseball.

Michelle Healey - St. John's

Recreation Director - Goulds Recreation Association. Extensive background in basketball at local, provincial & national level. Numerous awards such as Female Athlete of the Year in St. John's in 1996. Assisted Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation in preparation for 1995 Winter Games in Alberta.

Clayton Welsh - Grand Bank

Regional Recreation and Sport Consultant, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Attended the 1989 and 1993 Games with Soccer and was on Mission Staff at the 1985 Games.

Trevor Paine - Happy Valley-Goose Bay

Recreation and Sport Consultant, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Mission Staff member at the 1989 Canada Games. Experience on Executive of Provincial Winter Games and Labrador Games.

Terry Mosher - Manuels

Physical Education Teacher at Queen Elizabeth High School. Previous Canada Games experience in female volleyball as a coach in 1997. Numerous awards such as Coach of the Year in Volleyball provincially and former Vice President of Newfoundland and Labrador Volleyball Association.

David Doyle - Petty Harbour

Recreation and Sport Consultant, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Mission Staff member at the 1989 Canada Games. Background as player and as volunteer in Sport and Recreation at local and regional level.

Mac Blundon - St. John's

Working with Recreation and Sport Division, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Previous Canada Games Mission staff member 1995-1997. Involved in 1998 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games.

Frazer Russell - Clarenville

Program Specialist at the Clarenville Senior High School. Chairman of the 1994 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games Host Committee. Extensive background as a volunteer and coach with Minor Hockey and Minor Softball. Member of the 1997 Host Committee - National Midget Boy's Softball.

Jennifer Dolomount - Corner Brook

Teacher at Academy Canada. Physical education and graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. Former member of MUN Varsity Soccer Team. Involved in the Corner Brook Triathlon.
