Annual Arts and Letters Competition Begins

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that the Provincial Arts and Letters Competition is now receiving submission for this year's awards.

"This competition encourages and stimulates the creative talents of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians," Ms. Kelly said. "Since its inception in 1952, we have received tens of thousands of submissions, and an increased number of entries over the past years, indicates that interest in the program is growing."

Each applicant is required to submit his/her creative piece to either the Senior or Junior Divisions of the competition. The Senior Division categories are: Poetry; Fictional Prose/Short Story (Max. 5,000 words); Non-Fictional Prose (Max. 5,000 words); Dramatic Script; Musical Composition; Photography; Painting and Three Dimensional Art; and Drawing and Print Making. The Junior Division consist of three categories: Prose, Poetry; and Visual Art.

The prizes for the Junior (E.J. Pratt) Division are $300, $200, and $100 for first, second and third.

All entries to the competition must be received at the Arts and Letters Office located at the Arts and Culture in St. John's by 5 p.m., Friday, March 6, 1998 or postmarked by that date. Late entries will not be accepted.
