(Forest Resources and Agrifoods)

The following statement was issued today by Kevin Aylward, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods. It was also read in the House of Assembly:

Corner Brook Pulp and Paper, in its continual efforts to maximize the utilization of their timber supply, has introduced steep slope cable logging practices in Western Newfoundland. Two cable logging systems will be used on steep slopes previously inaccessible under traditional logging methods.

The move toward cable logging systems is a positive step toward addressing the Island's wood supply deficit. The additional volumes harvested by cable logging from stands previously not available due to terrain such as steep slopes will supplement the Island's wood supply in the forest sector.

Cable logging is also a wise choice environmentally. It is the best system for harvesting on steep sites. At no time does heavy equipment enter the cutting site. Felled wood is transported to the roadside with a cable system using a carrying device. The timber is then brought to roadside with little ground contact or disturbance.

Cable logging is a labour intensive process. All felling of timber is done with chainsaw operators. Corner Brook Pulp and Paper has informed me that between 20 and 25 jobs in the harvesting sector will be created with this process.

Trees will be processed at the roadside for pulpwood and sawlogs. The higher allotment of previously unusable timber allows a greater flow of logs to the sawmills, thereby increasing employment opportunities in the sawmill and harvesting sectors.

Initiatives such as the cable logging and the recent silviculture projects that are being undertaken this year show a continued effort by the industry to create a stable supply of timber resource in the future. Many of these projects are two-thirds funded by the pulp and paper industry in a multi-year agreement between the mills and government.

The recent silviculture projects and the cable logging projects, provided by the industry, will provide employment opportunities in rural Newfoundland and Labrador. We applaud the efforts of the industry as they work toward the goals.
