Premier pleased that lighthouses remain staffed Premier Brian Tobin stated today that he is pleased to have received assurances from federal Fisheries Minister David Anderson that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will not proceed with plans to destaff and decommission further lighthouses in Newfoundland and Labrador. "I learned earlier in the week that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans was considering the automation of more lighthouses in this province as a cost-saving measure, given the budget pressures the department is facing," said the premier. "I communicated to Minister Anderson the importance of these facilities in a province with such a tremendous amount of coastline, and one in which the need for safe marine navigation is unquestioned. I am pleased to see that he has reached the same conclusion." The premier commended the minister and the department for recognizing the importance of marine safety and effective navigation aids in this province where marine travel is a way of life. "Lighthouses are not only important in terms of safety," noted Premier Tobin, "in this province, lighthouses are an integral part of our seafaring culture and history."
