NEWFOUNDLAND GOLD AT THE
The First Annual Pepsi Newfoundland Atlantic Summer Open Badminton Tournament was hosted by Badminton Newfoundland and Labrador at the West Cost Training Centre in Stephenville from August 29-30,1997. This tournament was the first of five ranking tournaments on the 1997-98 Senior Atlantic Badminton Circuit.
In a close, well-played match, Sonu Wadhwa of St. John's defeated Joey Scott of Nova Scotia in finals of the men's singles. Scott won the first game 5-15, but a determined Wadhwa made a brilliant 17-14 come-back in the second game, followed by a 15-9 win, for the best 2 of 3 games. Jamie Payne of Cox's Cove defeated Dave Edmunds of Nova Scotia (originally from Happy Valley, Labrador) 15-8, 17-16 in the finals of the men's singles consolation.
Scott and Wadhwa joined forces to win the men's doubles by defeating Vishal Kaushik and Beenu Wadhwa (both of St. John's) 15-3, 15-6. Mike Alexander Sr. of Stephenville teamed up with Dave Edmunds to defeat Paul Kearley and Ian Arbuckle (Milltown), 15-11, 15-11 in the finals of the men's doubles consolation.
Ladies singles was also a close match between Claudia Baggs and Amanda Dunphy, both of Milltown. Baggs, with the best 2 of 3 games, won ladies singles. Baggs defeated Dunphy 5-11 in the first game. In the second game Dunphy came back to defeat Baggs 12-10, but lost to Baggs 11-7 in the third game. Crystal Petten of CBS defeated Jen Thomas of St. John's 11-8, 11-4 in the finals of the ladies consolation.
Baggs played with Laura Park of Cox's Cove to win the Ladies Doubles Round Robin. Melissa Fagan and Crystal Petten (both of CBS) came in second, and Amanda Dunphy and Jen Thomas won the consolation.
Sonu Wadhwa and Laura Park defeated Joey Scott and Claudia Baggs 15-10, 15-9 in the finals of the mixed doubles. In a close match Jamie Payne and Amanda Dunphy defeated Niall McComisky and Jennifer Sheppard (Stephenville) 10-15, 15-12, 17-16 in the finals of the mixed doubles consolation.
