Newfoundland and Labrador officials going to Canada Summer Games

Seven residents of Newfoundland and Labrador have been selected to officiate at the 1997 Canada Summer Games, taking place in Brandon, Manitoba from August 9-23. In addition, Dr. Francine LeMire and physiotherapist Ian Hutchison of Corner Brook will work with the Games medical staff.

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, applauded the officials. "I'd like to congratulate these people for the excellence they have achieved within their respective sports, and for having been selected by their national organizations to officiate at this major national event," Minister Kelly said.

Twenty teams from Newfoundland and Labrador will compete in the Canada Summer Games. Ms. Kelly says the province is very fortunate to have such a high calibre of coaches and officials to guide the teams.

In addition to Dr. LeMire and Mr. Hutchison, the seven officials selected are: Rob Antle of St. John's for soccer, Gerard Bennett of Kippens for wrestling, Hugh Harvey of St. John's for volleyball, Bill Hogan of St. John's for swimming, James Jennings of Gander for basketball, Charlie Pope of St. John's for water skiing and Chris Williams of St. John's for rowing.
