Mount Pearl Celebrates Tourism Awareness Month
with a Splash On Thursday, Mount Pearl celebrated Hospitality
Newfoundland and Labrador's Tourism Awareness Month with a
tourism luncheon highlighted by guest speakers, an awards
presentation, and exciting tourism entertainment.
The Mount Pearl Chamber of Commerce Tourism Luncheon, held at
Lucky's Restaurant in Mount Pearl, featured guest speaker Gordon
Slade, Chair of this year's Tourism Awareness Month Committee and
a board member of Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr.
Slade presented the annual Ambassadors of Hospitality Award to
Marine Atlantic, for its outstanding contribution to Newfoundland
and Labrador's tourism industry, in bringing customers to and
from Newfoundland and the mainland of Canada, and for promoting
our province to the rest of Canada.
The Tourism Luncheon was attended by prominent guests as the
minister of Human Resources and Employment, Julie Bettney, the
Mayor of Mount Pearl Chamber of Commerce, Cheryl Rodd. Giovanni
Caboto even joined the celebrations! The luncheon was followed by
entertainment by First Light Productions, a theatrical group
which conducts amusing and informative mining tours of Bell
Island.
The Mount Pearl Chamber of Commerce Luncheon was pronounced a
great success by organizers and guests alike. According to Gordon
Slade, "the luncheon was both a celebration of Hospitality
Newfoundland and Labrador's Tourism Awareness Month and a perfect
kick-off for Mount Pearl's summer Cabot 500 celebrations."
Do It! -- Let's Welcome the World with Our Homemade Charm! is
the theme for this year's Tourism Awareness Month. HNL Executive
Director Cathy Duke, explained that the theme was selected in
order to motivate all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to
participate in tourism.
Tourism Awareness Month was officially launched by the
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, Sandra Kelly, on May
26 in Labrador City. Launch activities took place province-wide,
with launches held in Eastern/Avalon, Central, and Western
Newfoundland as well. Celebrations will continue until June 20
and include Tourism Open House events, trivia contests, dinners,
receptions, guided tours,... any activity that helps to promote
tourism and educate individuals and businesses about the
industry's economic significance to the province.
Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador initiated the tourism
awareness campaign eleven years ago as Tourism Awareness Week.
Due to its success, Newfoundland and Labrador now celebrates
Tourism Awareness Month.
