May 28, 1997 National Capital Commission commemorates 500th M. Marcel Beaudry, Chairman of the National Capital Commission (NCC), announced today at the Bowring Park Bungalow an in-cash, in-kind contribution to the Bowring Park Foundation, and unveiled a set of commemorative banners. The contribution is part of an outreach program which bring's Ottawa to the people of Canada. In addition to a financial contribution, the NCC has donated a set of park furniture identical to that found along Confederation Boulevard, for a new rest area in Bowring Park. In conjunction with the John Cabot 500th Anniversary Celebrations, the NCC invited public submissions for the design of the 1997 NCC banners, marking Newfoundland and Labrador's 500th anniversary celebration. Designs by local artist Brenda McClellan were chosen from 14 proposals submitted. The banners which depict Newfoundland and Labrador's landscape and culture, are installed at the Plaza Bridge and the McDonald-Cartier International Airport. Together with a full set of interpretation panels, the banners proclaim a celebratory message to all Canadians through their presence in the nation's capital. A second set of banners designed and produced by the NCC was also unveiled today. These banners are currently installed along the full length of Confederation Boulevard which surrounds Parliament Hill and extends into Hull. The banners celebrate early exploration in Canada, and Cabot's 1497 voyage in particular. Both the Cabot 500 Celebrations, and Canadian Heritage have purchased banners for installation at public spaces throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The first set was installed today at Bowring Park. Another set, with accompanying interpretive panels, will be installed at Signal Hill in the coming weeks. Contact:
