National Capital Commission to Commemorate 500th Anniversary With Major Gift to Bowring Park

On Wednesday, May 28th, 1997, Marcel Beaudry, Chairman of the National Capital Commission will announce a major donation to the Bowring Park Foundation. A set of park furniture from Confederation Park in Ottawa, and a financial contribution will be officially donated to Bowring Park at a special ceremony Wednesday morning. Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will attend the conference.

During the ceremony the John Cabot 500th Anniversary Celebrations will unveil a set of banners produced in conjunction with the National Capital Commission. Designed by local artist, Brenda McClellan, the banners depict scenes inspired by the culture and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The banners were unveiled in Ottawa in early May and have been installed at the Plaza Bridge, and at the Macdonald Cartier airport. A second set of banners commemorating John Cabot's voyage in 1497 and the spirit of discovery in Canada has been installed along Confederation Boulevard in Ottawa.

Members of the press are invited to attend the event which will be held in Bowring Park in front of the Bungalow at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday May 28, 1997. In case of inclement weather, the conference will take place in the Bowring Park Bungalow.
