The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

The winners and runners up for the High School Athletic Federation Annual Awards have been named by awards chairman, Wayne Lee. All winners and runners up have been invited to accept their awards at the banquet, held in conjunction with the annual general meeting, Saturday, May 24 at Sinbads Hotel in Gander.

The Coach of the Year for 1996-97 is Henry Hounsell from Pasadena Academy. Hounsell has had an excellent season coaching the Pasadena boys volleyball team. His test of accomplishments include gold medals in Volleyfest, Harbour Breton Invitiational, Abitibi Price Invitational, Pasadena Invitational and Provincial 4A championships. His team has won six consecutive high school championships and finished the season with a 32 - 1 record. Runners up for the Coach of the Year were Fred Simms from Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts (hockey) and Henry McDonald from Dunne Memorial Academy in St. Mary's (basketball).

The Coaching Service Award is given to an individual in recognition of a long career involvement in coaching high school sports and developing superior programs. Jim Feltham from Elwood Regional High in Deer Lake as been named as the recipient of this award for his long time involvement in high school sports, particulary basketball. Dating back to 1964-65, Feltham has been involved in high school sports with Lewisporte Regional High in hockey, badminton and basketball. From 1972-96 he has been a teacher at Elwood Regional High and has been instrumental in the success of badminton and basketball at his school. Feltham's season culminated this year with the silver medal at the 4A basketball championships. The runners up for this award were Terry Mosher from Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap) and Tom Bartlett from St. Stephen's High (Stephenville).

The Honor Award is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the federation through many areas of involvement over many years. David Dibbon from Bishops College is this years winner. Dibbon's involvement with high school sports started in 1979 when he was a physical education teacher. From 1980-88 he was a zone president, 1986-90 provincial vice-president and 1990-91 federation president. Throughout his involvement at the provincial level, he has worked on classification review, chairman of office management committe, chariman of hockey pool committee, and chairman of awards committee. The runners up for the Honor Award are Keith Kelloway from Berney Memorial (Burin) and Mike Sutton from O'Donel High (Mount Pearl).

The Brother G.I. Moore Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year are reserved for graduating students who best combines the ideals of the federation with both athletic and academic prowess. Newfoundland Power provides a $750 scholarship to the male and female winners.

Savior Joseph from Elwood Regional High in Deer Lake is this year's recipient for the 1997 Male Student Athlete of the Year. Joseph has been involved in both volleyball and basketball, but has proven to be one of the best in the province in basketball. He has helped his Elwood Lakers to an impressive season placing third and second at the 4A level the past two years. He has captained both basketball and volleyball teams at Elwood and is also a member of the 1997 Canada Games Basketball Team. He has been named Athelte of the Year at Xavier Junior High and Elwood High, as well as being named to many all star teams. The runners up for Male Student Athlete of the Year are Patrick Lake from Pasadena Academy and Jonathan Nosewothy from Bishops College in St. John's.

Jillian McDonald from Dunne Memorial Academy in St. Marys is the winner of the 1997 Female Student Athlete of the Year. At the high school level she has been involved in a variety of activities including badminton, volleyball, cross country running, softball and basketball. McDonald has been a member of three provincial championship basketball teams, being named co-captain for the past two years. She has been named Athlete of the Year for Dunne Memorial and is involved in coaching basketball and is currently student council president. The runners up for the Female Student Athlete of the Year are Marsha Waddleton from Stella Maris in Trepassey and Alicia Farrell from St. Lawrence Central High.

Each of the 11 regions in the province will also be presenting a recognition award to an individual in their region for their involvement in the success of high schools sports. The winners of Regional Recognition Awards are as follows: St. John's - Walter White, Avalon South - John Dillon (St. Catherines), Avalon West - Michael Murrin (Discovery Collegiate), Burin Peninsula - Brendan Isaacs (St. Joseph's), Central East - Eliza Briffett (Glovertown), Central - Glenn Harnum (Bursey Memorial), Central West - David Mercer (Charisma Collegiate), Western - Graham Oliver (St. Michaels) and Northern - Dave Martin (Labrador City).
