Proposals being accepted for parks' properties

The provincial government has begun the process of accepting proposals from individuals and groups interested in acquiring any of the 21 parks which were offered to the public last week by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. A public proposal call will be placed in provincial newspapers throughout the upcoming weekend and week. Government will not be making the seven natural and scenic attractions available for private business opportunities. The scenic attractions will be available for municipalities and local groups as community services and not as business units.

"There has been tremendous interest in these 21 parks. In the past week, government has received more than 200 enquiries of interest from private sector enterprises, community groups, associations and employees interested in securing these business opportunities in rural Newfoundland and Labrador," Ms. Kelly said. "An employee take-over program has also been devised by government and is available to employees affected by this initiative."

The parks' properties being made available include: Backside Pond, Bellevue Beach, Beothuck, Catamaran, David Smallwood, Duley Lake, Fitzgerald's Pond, Flatwater Pond, Gushue's Pond, Grand Codroy, Indian River, Jack's Pond, Jipujijkuei Kuespem, Jonathan's Pond, Marine Drive, Northern Bay Sands, Piccadilly Head, River of Ponds, Sop's Arm, Square Pond, and Windmill Bight.

Proposals will be directed to the Department of Government Services and Lands. Proposals should include bids on: (1) a licence to occupy the land, and (2) the purchase of the relevant assets. Proposals should be developed in accordance to proposal guidelines which can be obtained from the Government Services Centres situated throughout the province. The closing date for the proposals is 12 noon on April 4, 1997. Information regarding the process or the 21 park properties can be obtained by contacting Jim Byrne, Tourism, Culture and Recreation at (709) 729-4893 or by fax at (709) 729-0870.
