MuchMusic to profile Marble Mountain and Cabot Celebrations

Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, and Paul Dicks, Minister of Finance and Treasury Board, today announced that the MuchMusic television network has chosen Newfoundland and Labrador as the production site for its popular SNOWJOB television special for 1997.

"The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation is delighted to have landed this project for Marble Mountain, the Cabot Celebrations and indeed the province's tourism industry. This project is truly a cooperative effort," Ms. Kelly said. "The Hotel/Motel Association of Newfoundland and Labrador, Air Canada/Air Nova, and Cable Atlantic have played integral roles in assuring the success of this project. SNOWJOB will showcase Marble Mountain and the Cabot Celebrations and will bring significant, international exposure which will highlight our ski industry and our rich tourism product. This production will be broadcast to more than 10 million households throughout Canada and the United States as well as to other international networks."

Four individual camera crews from MuchMusic will travel throughout Newfoundland and Labrador in February and March to capture a flavour of our musical and cultural industries as well as our spectacular natural and scenic attractions. SNOWJOB '97 will air for one full week and will include a MuchMusic concert featuring major, international recording artists who will be announced in early February. The highlight of SNOWJOB '97 will be a free concert at Marble Mountain. Great Big Sea has been selected by MuchMusic as one of the acts for the outdoor concert which will take place at Marble Mountain on March 22, 1997.

"This project will strengthen Marble Mountain's visibility in the national and international marketplace," Mr. Dicks said. "A conservative estimate of the airtime value is in excess of $1.5 million. This project will result in 64 broadcast hours which will be televised over a seven-day period. This will be the fifth SNOWJOB production with previous locations including Whistler and Lake Louise, Banff.

This is the first time that an Eastern Canada location has been chosen as a production site for MuchMusic's SNOWJOB. As a result of this MuchMusic project, there will be a significant economic benefit to Newfoundland and Labrador. Further details concerning the free concert as well as the headlining bands will be announced in February by MuchMusic and the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
