54th annual Mines and Energy Ministers'
Conference M
The 54th annual Mines and Energy Ministers' Conference will be
held in St. John's at Hotel Newfoundland from July 6-9.
Representatives of the federal government, 10 provinces, two
territories and industry will attend the conference to discuss
key issues affecting the mining and oil and gas sectors.
"Canada's mining and oil and gas industries contribute
$36 billion in output annually to the Canadian economy,"
says Charles J. Furey, Minister of Mines and Energy, who will
co-chair the conference with Ralph Goodale, Minister of Natural
Resources, Government of Canada. "The Mines and Energy
Ministers' Conference is an excellent opportunity for ministers
from across Canada to gather to discuss important issues
concerning this significant component of the economy. It is also
a chance to work together to maximize the positive impact the
sector will have on the economy in the future."
Mines Ministers will discuss the harmonizing of
federal/provincial processes and the creation other regulatory
efficiencies in an effort to increase the international
competitiveness of the mining industry in the future. The Energy
Ministers will discuss a range of important issues including:
energy trade; harmonization of regulatory processes; energy and
the environment including Canada's position for the upcoming
International Climate Change Negotiations.
Approximately 230 invited delegates from across Canada are
expected to participate in this year's conference. Highlights of
the conference include: presentations by industry during open
