March 5, 1997
(Social Services)

Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Social Services, recently declared March 3-7, 1997 National Social Work Week in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The minister said she was pleased to make this proclamation in recognition of the valuable role social workers play in our society. "Social workers are a valuable asset to our society in many ways and deserve our sincere appreciation. I encourage everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador to recognize Social Work Week and to acknowledge the positive and very worthwhile effect the social work profession has had on the lives of countless individuals and communities throughout the province."

The minister said that social work is practiced in a variety of areas including child and family programs, mental health services, hospitals, schools, social planning, non-profit organizations, drug and alcohol counselling, corrections, counselling centres, research and education, and private practice. She added: "While I commend all social workers in the province, for their selfless dedication, I would like to send a special thank you to social workers in my department. They don't hear it often enough, but government and I do realize the value of their work and do appreciate it."

Social workers provide professional assistance to people seeking to overcome personal and social problems in order to lead satisfying, full, and productive lives. They offer services to individuals, families, groups and communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
