June 19, 1997 (Forest Resources and Agrifoods) Precommercial Thinning Project for Exploits District Beaton Tulk, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, and Roger Grimes, Minister of Education and MHA - Exploits, are pleased to announce the award of a contract for precommercial thinning to be carried out in the Northern Arm area. The successful bidder for the $50,350 contract is Samson Holding of Harbour Breton. One hundred hectares of heavily treed forest will be thinned in order to improve overall growth and stand development. Mr. Tulk stated: "This is part of the Department's long-term forest management plan." Mr. Grimes added: "The end results of the project will allow that area of the forest to produce a better quality of timber." By thinning the overgrown areas, superior trees are left with less competition for light, moisture and nutrients, thereby increasing their individual size as well as the wood yield per hectare. The project is due to start June 16, running for six weeks. A total of 15 people will be employed on during the project.
