National meeting of natural resource law enforcement chiefs in St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador will play host for a meeting of natural resource law enforcement chiefs from all over North America this week, beginning 1 p.m. April 30 to May 3 at Hotel Newfoundland. The meetings were scheduled to coincide with the Cabot celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of the discovery of Newfoundland. This annual event provides this particular group of law enforcement specialists an opportunity to discuss, debate, and share ideas on unique issues facing the enforcement of natural resources laws. This year's meeting will feature discussions on the development of a National Enforcement Strategy for Canada, Interprovincial and International Trade in Fish and Wildlife, review of special species Actions Plans, such as black bear, as well as, presentations of the latest developments in special investigations and intelligence operations (under cover operations). The meetings in Newfoundland offer a special occasion to direct national attention to the unique resources of this province. Field trips will include viewing the Avalon caribou herd and the Witless Bay seabird colonies. The conference brings together conservation officers from every province, as well as representatives from Parks Canada, Customs Canada, Canadian Wildlife Service, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, the national office of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
