Minister responds to comments by Oppositon Leader

The Minister of Finance, Paul Dicks, commented today on the statement by the Leader of the Opposition with respect to the province's budgetary position.

Mr. Dicks said: "The Leader of the Opposition is incorrect in his assertion that the province's budgetary position is off course. In fact, the budgetary position for the current year is somewhat improved from the $44.8 million deficit which had been estimated in the 1996-97 Budget."

The minister confirmed that the contingency fund has been partially utilized by the province for some unforeseen expenditures, the major one being the Mount Cashel Orphanage settlement. However, as was indicated in the mid-year statement by the minister, both revenues and expenditures have improved from the original estimates, and the minister is confident that the budgetary targets will be met.
