(Executive Council)

The following is being distributed at the request of the Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers:

NOTE TO EDITORS:

Jobs, Trade and Energy in the Northeast: Progress in a Changing Economy is the theme of this year's Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers scheduled for June 2-4, 1997 in Newport, Rhode Island, USA. Agenda items include the impact of NAFTA, to date, on New England and Eastern Canada; economic development effects of wholesale energy deregulation in the United States; and the economic effects of environmental issues such as acid rain and mercury deposition.

Premier Frank McKenna of New Brunswick and Governor Lincoln Almond of Rhode Island will be co-chairing the meeting being held at the Doubletree Islander Hotel.

Conference sessions, open to the media, will be held on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 3 and the morning of Wednesday, June 4. A news conference has been scheduled at the end of each day's business. A detailed agenda and schedule of events is attached.

Members of the media planning to cover the Conference must register in advance. You are encouraged to register early.

Because hotel space at the conference site is limited, the media is advised to contact one of the following hotels, located near the Doubletree, for lodging reservations:

          Marriott (401) 849-1000
          Newport Harbour Hotel & Marina (401) 847-9000

or contact Taylor-made Reservations (1-800-847-6820) for
          further assistance with hotel reservations.

Premiers comprises the premiers of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and

Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec, and the

governors of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode

Island, and Vermont. The provinces and states have been meeting since
