Environmental Assessment Bulletin Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown for each item.
The proponent has submitted a five year operating plan for District 15 Forest Management Unit. The plan describes proposed harvesting, silviculture, road construction and forest protection activities, including environmental protection measures to be employed. Forest Management District 15 is located along the west coast of the island between Grand Lake and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The project was registered on December 3, 1997, public comments must be received before January 3, 1998 and the minister's decision is due on January 17, 1998.
The proponent proposes to develop and operate a four hectare gypsum quarry located approximately 300 metres east of Coal Brook and about 1,000 metres from the intersection with Flat Bay Brook. Access to the site will be by means of a Class C-2 gravel road. Approximately 10,000 tonnes of crushed gypsum will be produced annually. Temporary construction facilities may include a construction office, lunch room, parking area and equipment servicing facilities. Construction is tentatively scheduled to commence in the spring of 1998. The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the Sir Richard Squires Tourism Lodge which was recently registered and examined by government and the public. This undertaking is released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements. A guide to the Environmental Assessment Process is available from the Department of Environment and Labour.
