Environmental assessment bulletin Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the Regional Office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date following each item. Solid Waste Landfill Facility The proponent proposes to construct and operate a controlled solid waste landfill facility within the boundary of the existing Thermal Generating Station at Holyrood, Conception Bay. The facility will be a direct landfill site for solid waste produced as a function of energy production and will be able to accommodate the waste from the existing plant operation for approximately 40-60 years. The site will consist of a settling pond and four waste pits which will be developed in stages. Work will involve the removal of all existing structures, foundations and fencing, construction of a utility shed and excavation and backfill operations to produce a level site. Construction is tentatively scheduled to commence in April 1998. The project was registered on November 7, 1997, public comments must be received before December 12, 1997 and the minister's decision is due on December 22, 1997. GUIDELINES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PREVIEW REPORT (EPR) ISSUED
Guidelines for the preparation of the EPR have been issued by the minister. The proponent may now proceed with the preparation of the EPR, which must be submitted for review to determine whether an environmental impact statement is required. Copies of the guidelines are available for information at the Environmental Assessment Division, St. John's office. NO ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertaking which has recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertaking is released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.
