Environment and Labour Minister Oliver Langdon has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the regional office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date following each item.
The proponent proposes to construct and operate a blasting agent (ANFO) manufacturing plant approximately five kilometres south of Corner Brook. The proposed access to the site is via a forest access road 1.5 kilometres west of the intersection of the TCH and Route 450. The ANFO blasting agent is intended for road building, construction, mining and quarry blasting. The plant will consist of three specially outfitted highway trailers set on concrete pedestals. A 2,000 gallon water tank and a 60 ton ammonium nitrate silo will be erected as well as a loading dock and an expanded metal catwalk interlinking the trailers. Construction is tentatively scheduled to commence in the fall of 1997. The project was registered on September 15, 1997, public comments must be received before October 17, 1997 and the minister's decision is due on October 30, 1997.
The proponent proposes to construct and operate tourist accommodations situated on Route 430 in the community of River of Ponds. The accommodations will include four housekeeping units, laundromat and snackbar. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in July 1998. The project was registered on September 15, 1997, public comments must be received before October 17, 1997 and the minister's decision is due on October 30, 1997.
The minister has determined that the revised Environmental Preview Report for the Garia Bay Power Development is satisfactory and an environmental impact statement is not required. The proponent may now proceed with the undertaking subject to other acts or regulations.
The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertaking which has recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertaking is released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.
