The following is being distributed at the request of the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board:

Trash to Cash "Name the Mascots" winners

The Multi-Materials Stewardship Board, set up to oversee the Deposit Refund System for beverage containers, announced today they have given the new Trash to Cash program personality. The characters displayed in the logo for the Green Back Trash to Cash program now have names.

From a contest held in March, winning awards went to Dawn Edwards of Lawn for her entry Twister for the bottle, Thomas Squire of Wabush for his entry Flip for the can, and Barbara Garland of Mount Pearl for her entry Spout for the tetra carton. Honourable mention went to Kelvin Billard of St. James Regional High School in Port aux Basques for his entry The Three Enviroteers. Ten runners up were also selected. The board presented winners with a cash prize of $100 and the runners up with a Trash to Cash T-shirt. People from all over the province submitted names and choosing the right ones to do the job was a challenge for the Selection Committee.

The MMSB will be using Twister, Flip and Spout in future promotions. The board plans to put the characters in costumes for use in promoting the Trash to Cash program at community events and in schools.

In announcing the awards, the board also noted the program has been in operation since January 15, 1997 and to date more than 38 million Twisters, Flips and Spouts have been returned for recycling.
