Environment and Labour Minister Kevin Aylward has announced the following events relative to the Environmental Assessment Act. In the case of documents received or approved, copies may be obtained by contacting the Regional Office of the Department of Environment and Labour or by calling toll-free 1-800-563-6181. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date following each item.

  • NEW UNDERTAKING REGISTERED

    Utshimassits (Davis Inlet) to Natuashish (Sango Bay) Relocation
    Proponent: Mushuau Innu Band Council

The proponent proposes to relocate the Innu community of Utshimassits (Davis Inlet) to Natuashish. This is located approximately 295 km north of Happy Valley-Goose Bay at the head of Sango Bay on the mainland of northern coastal Labrador. Construction of the new community at Natuashish will be carried out over a six year period, from 1997 to 2002 and will include the townsite and all supporting infrastructure (roads, airstrip, wharf etc.). The eventual abandonment and decommissioning of Utshimassits will be dealt with in a separate registration. There are 36 feasibility and background studies associated with the undertaking. These documents are available for review at the Environmental Assessment Division office in St. John's. The undertaking was registered on June 5, 1997, public comments should be received before July 11, 1997 and the minister's decision is due on July 20, 1997.

  • NO ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT REQUIRED:

The minister has decided that an environmental impact statement is not required for the following undertakings, which have recently been registered and examined by government and the public. The undertakings are released subject to other regulatory and permitting requirements.

  • - St. Lawrence Water Bottling and Export Facility
    - Metchin River to Wilson River Road (Trans Labrador Highway)

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known.
