April 9, 1997 (Environment and Labour) Environmental Awards Nominations The Department of Environment and Labour and the Women's Institutes of Newfoundland and Labrador are now accepting nominations for Environmental Awards. If you wish to nominate a person, group, or organization you have until May 16. The Department of Environment and Labour sponsors the Awards Programme to recognize the efforts of citizens of the province and to raise awareness for the environment. Kevin Aylward, Minister of Environment and Labour, stated: "This is the eighth year that these awards have been presented. Each year the number of nominations increases, which is a good sign that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are becoming more involved in environmental activities." Deris Hollett, president of the Women's Institute, says: "Each year we look forward to receiving the nomination forms. People are participating in some innovative ventures which are proving to be very beneficial to our province." Awards have been given for such projects such as cleaning up illegal dump sites, removing car wrecks, creating environmental education programs, and recycling efforts. The categories available for nomination include: individual, citizens' group or organization, education, youth, business, and municipal. "Recognizing the leadership of individuals who set examples in helping clean up our environment is important," said Ms. Hollett.
