The following is being distributed at the request of the Human Rights Commission:

The Human Rights Commission reports that a board of inquiry will commence on Monday, March 24 into a complaint filed against the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation.

The complaint was filed with the commission in February 1996 by Glen Dawe of St. John's. Mr. Dawe applied for a position of liquor control inspector with the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation in September of 1994. Mr. Dawe who attended two interviews with the corporation was requested to undergo a medical examination and obtain medical clearance. In November 1995, Mr. Dawe received documentation from the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act. As a result of this information Mr. Dawe filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission alleging discrimination under the Human Rights Code on the basis of physical disability. In his complaint, Mr. Dawe states: "I believe I was improperly treated differently from other candidates for the position because officials of the Newfoundland Liquor Corporation perceived I had a physical disability." The complaint was not settled during the investigation process and on October 18, 1996, the Human Rights Commission ordered the appointment of a board of inquiry.

The adjudicator for the complaint is Elizabeth M. Heneghan of St. John's. Barry Fleming will present the complaint on behalf of the Human Rights Commission. The hearing which is open to the public will commence at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 24 at the Airport Plaza Hotel in St. John's.
