Minister announces funding for new schools and construction projects Roger Grimes, Minister of
Education, has announced approximately $26 million worth of school construction projects.
Mr. Grimes said: "On the recommendation of the Provincial School Construction Board, I have
approved funding for 15 school construction projects. These projects will be completed over the next
three years at a cost of just over $26 million" Projects included in the minister's announcement are
as follows:
- A new K-12 school at Rigolet;
- A new K-12 school at Hopedale;
- Additional classrooms at Nain;
- A new K-6 school for the Jackson's Arm/Pollard's Point area;
- Construction of a new high school section to Belanger Memorial School, Upper Ferry and
renovations to the remaining section of the existing school;
- Removal of existing portables and construction of two new classrooms and a multipurpose/lunch
room at Grandy's River Collegiate, Burnt Islands;
- Construction of a new high school section to the existing school at St. George's and renovation
to the remaining section;

Mr. Grimes noted that these are the first projects which have been recommended for funding by the
Provincial School Construction Board. Previously applications for school construction projects were
considered by the denominational committees based on denominational priorities. However, under the
new legislation requests for funding of school construction projects are considered on the basis of
provincial priorities by an independent school construction board.
Mr. Grimes said: "This demonstrates government's commitment to replace old schools which have
outlived their usefulness and to provide students of this province with modern, well equipped places in
which to learn."
