Atlantic Accord Scholarship winners announced

The federal and provincial governments today announced the names of 144 high school, college and university students who are winners of individual $2,000 scholarships under the Atlantic Accord Career Development Awards Program.

The announcement was made by Fred Mifflin, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, on behalf of Anne McLellan, federal Minister of Natural Resources and by Roger Grimes, Minister of Education.

"The Government of Canada is proud to participate in this program," said Mr. Mifflin. "These scholarships will help improve the skills of and enhance employment opportunities for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in the offshore sector."

The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage the province's top students to pursue post-secondary studies in areas directly related to exploration, development and production activities in the offshore oil and gas industry. The Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Development Fund finances the awards. To receive a scholarship, students must attend a post-secondry institution full-time and be enrolled in a study program that may lead to a career in the offshore.

"These awards will pay high dividends to the province over the long term by contributing now to the educational development of our most promising students," Mr. Grimes said.

The Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Development Fund was established to help defray costs related to oil and gas development off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, allowing the province to benefit from offshore development activity.
