March 20, 1997 Government Increases Funding
for School Construction The Provincial Budget in the past three years for School Construction has totalled $18 million. Government recognizes that a significant increase is required in the level of funding for school construction and repair. The Minister of Education, Roger Grimes, says additional funding to facilitate school consolidation plans will be needed. As well, the current infrastructure is aging and repairs are required. "Over the next three years, government will provide a total of $38 million for school construction, an increase of $20 million over the levels provided in the previous three years," said Mr. Grimes. "Government sees this initiative as a major investment for our students." The government, school boards, and parents want to ensure that our school facilities are adequate to meet the educational requirements of our children. Mr. Grimes said the benefits from this initiative are two fold in that we will provide better facilities for students and provide a boost to the construction industry.
