March 20, 1997 Government Increases Funding for Literacy Initiatives The Provincial Government currently provides funding in the amount of $431,000 to the Literacy Development Council and plans to maintain that level for 1997-98. In the past, funding has been used for literacy projects and the administration costs associated with the council. Education Minister, Roger Grimes, said the province would like to see more of this funding go directly into literacy initiatives. To achieve this goal, government has asked the Literacy Development Council and the Provincial Information and Library Resources Board to combine their administration units. Government feels this will result in a more efficient operation with more money being freed up for Literacy Development Programs. Mr. Grimes says: "It's another example of government making better use of the financial resources available for improving literacy in Newfoundland and Labrador. We recognize how important it is to improve the literacy rates in our province if we are to compete with other Canadians and people throughout the world in the future."
