The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation: 

Provincial Volleyball The High School Athletic Federation rounds out its calendar of sports for the year with six provincial volleyball championships slated for this weekend. The girls A, 2A, 3A and 4A and the boys 2A and 4A champions will be decided among a of field 51 teams.

The A girls tournament is being co-hosted by H. G. Fillier Academy in Englee and A. C. Palmer in Roddickton. Playing in the Maroon division out of Englee will be host school, Cottrells Cove Academy, Lumsden School, Sops Arm Central High and Christ the King High (Rushoon). In Roddickton the other host school will square off against Jakeman Central High (Trout River), Legallais Memorial (Isle aux Morts), Corpus Christi High (Northern Bay) and A. R. Scammell (Change Islands).

The opening ceremonies will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday followed by the opening round robin matches of the tournament. The round robin portion of the schedule continues on Saturday at 9 a.m. The playoffs will be played at H. G. Fillier with the top two teams from each division meeting in the cross overs. The championship game is slated for 4:30 p.m.

The boys and girls 2A championships are being hosted in Goose Bay by Goose High and Lake Melville schools respectively. Boys and girls island tournaments were held last weekend to decide which island teams would travel to Labrador for the provincial championships. Little Hearts Ease and Hollands Memorial were the victors. The boys 2A tournament will be a six team round robin affair. Along with the host Goose High and the island winner, Little Hearts Ease All Grade will be Our Lady Queen of Peace (Goose Bay), Eric G. Lambert (Churchill Falls), Labrador City Collegiate and J. C. Erhardt (Makkovik).

The girls tournament will feature nine teams playing a two division format. Division A will see action from Hollands Memorial, Our Lady Queen of Peace, J. C. Erhardt and Lake Melville School. In division B, Goose High, Amos Comenius (Hopedale), Labrador City Colleigate, Eric G. Lambert and Peenamin McKenzie (Sheshatshit) will be playing for the top two spots. The top two teams meeting in the semi-finals to earn a berth in the final.

Opening ceremonies for the two tournaments will be held together on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Goose High school. The matches get under way 8 a.m. Friday at Goose High for the boys and the Labrador Training Center for the girls. The boys final is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday while the girls champion will be declared from a 3:30 game.

Pasadena Academy will play host to the six team 3A girls championships. Playing in the round robin event with the host will be Templeton Collegiate (Gillams), Baltimore High (Ferryland), St. Michael's High (Grand Falls) Lester Pearson High (Wesleyville) and Botwood Collegiate. Games get under way at 1 p.m. Friday and continue throughout the day into Saturday. The top four teams advance to the semi-finals. The championship games is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Queen Elizabeth Regional High will be the host school for the 10 team 4A boys championships, to be held in Foxtrap. Playing out of Queen Elizabeth in division 1 will be the host, Bishops College (St. John's), Bishop O'Neill Collegiate (Brigus), Grand Falls Academy and Pasadena Academy.

Division 2 will be played at Frank Roberts Intermediate School and will include Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Gander Collegiate, Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook), Mount Pearl Sr. High and Roncalli High (Avondale).

Games get under way at 1:15 p.m. Friday. Ten games will be played Friday with the remaining 10 round robin games slated for Saturday starting at 8:15 a.m. The semi-finals, featuring the top two teams from each division will be played at 2 p.m. followed by the championship game at 3:10.

Discovery Collegiate in Bonavista will be the host for the girls 4A volleyball tournament. Division A teams consist of the host, Bishop's College (St. John's), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Grand Falls Academy and Marystown Central High. Playing in Division 2 will be Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook), Gander Collegiate, Clarenville Integrated, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap) and Roncalli Central High (Avondale). Start time for the event is 12 noon, Friday with 14 matches running on Friday. The remaining six will be played on Saturday followed by the semi-finals and championship game.
