The following is being distributed at the request of Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

High School Championship Series begin

The Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation will be holding the first of its provincial tournaments this coming weekend. Champions will be decided in soccer and slo-pitch for both males and females.

Roncali High School in Port Saunders will be the host school for the Girls 3A Slo-Pitch. Eight teams have confirmed their attendance at the competition. Play gets underway 9:30 a.m. Friday at both Port Saunders and Port Au Choix fields. Division A at Port Saunders will see action from the host, St. Joseph's (Lamaline), J.M. Olds Collegate (Twillingate), and St. Marks All Grade (Kings Cove). Division B will feature Dorset Collegate (Pilley's Island), Cannon Richards High (Flowers Cove), Baltimore High (Ferryland) and Our Lady of Lourdes (Lourdes). The top two teams from each division after the round robin play will face off in the semi-final, and championship games are scheduled for 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

St. John's Central High in Burgeo is the host school for the Boys 3A Slo-Pitch. Seven teams will play off in a two divisional format. Division A consists of Dunne Memorial (St. Mary's), LeGallais Memorial (Isle Aux Morts), Dorset Collegiate (Pilley's Island) and J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate). Vying for top spot in Division B will be St. Joseph's (Lamaline), Roncalli High (Port Saunders) and the host St. John. Games will start at 8:45 a.m. Friday. The semi-final games will be played at 1 p.m. and 2:14 p.m. The championship game will be played at 4 p.m.

The Girls 4A Slo-Pitch tournament will be played October 25 and 26 in Bay Roberts. The Boys 4A Slo-Pitch tournament was cancelled because a host school could not be obtained.

Keyin Technical College is sponsoring the federation once again this year and will be on hand to present the Keyin Sportsmanship Awards. The federation championship banner will be awarded to the championship teams.
