Girls basketball championships to be held this weekend


The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

The best high school girls basketball teams will compete this coming weekend as four provincial titles are on the line. A total of 36 teams from across the province have advanced through zone and regional play and qualified for the provincial finals.

Arnolds Cove and Little Hearts Ease are the sites for the A girls tournament. St. Michael's and Little Hearts Ease school will host Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Joseph's (Lamaline), Deer Lake Pentecostal School, St. Joseph's (Bay de Verde), Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), St. Augustines High (Plum Point), Leo Burke Academy (Grand Falls-Windsor), and Fatima High (St. Brides). The round robin play gets under way 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The championship game is set for 3 p.m. Saturday.

Eight teams have qualified for the 2A event being hosted by St. Lawrence Central High. Division A, played at St. Lawrence, will feature the host, J.M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Our Lady Queen of Peace (Happy Valley) and Pasadena Academy. Division B will play out of the Recreation Centre and will see Dunne Memorial (St. Mary's), Ralph Laite Collegiate (Lewisporte), Vaters Collegiate (St. John's) and Stephenville Intregrated squaring off. The tournament starts 4 p.m. on Thursday with the championship game 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Elwood High in Deer Lake is the host school for the 3A tourney. The host school takes on St. Mikes (Grand Falls-Windsor), John Burke High (Grand Bank), Menihek High (Labrador City) and Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony) in Division A while Division B will see action from Fogo Island Academy, St. Catherines (Mount Carmel), St. Stephen's High, Grand Falls Academy and St. Francis (Harbour Grace). Games will be played at both Elwood High and Xavier High with the first game scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Thursday. The championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening.

Laval High School in Placentia will be the site of the 4A girls provincial final. Eight teams will compete for the coveted provincial banner. The red division consists of Holy Heart of Mary (St. John's), O'Donel High (Mount Pearl), Laval High (Placentia) and Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook). The gold division consists of Stella Maris High (Trepassey), Gander Collegiate, Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John's) and Beaconsfield High (St. John's). Games will be played at the Laval and Holy Rosary gyms and get started at 4 p.m. Thursday. The championship game will be played at 3 p.m.

Championship banners will be presented to each winning team along with gold medals. Foul shooting awards will be given to one individual from each tournament who wins the separate foul shooting competition. Keyin Technical College, sponsor of the federation, will present Keyin Sportsmanship Awards to one individual in each tournament.
