The following is being distributed at the request of John Cabot (1997) 500th Anniversary Corporation:

Fraudulent Solicitation of Donations

It has come to the attention of the Cabot 500 Celebrations today that a gentleman has been circulating through the Avalon Mall soliciting donations for "Cabot 500" in return for a tag.

A man has been asking mall patrons if they would like to support Cabot 500 by donating money in return for a tag which has pictured on one side a sketch of the Matthew and the words "the place we call home - New founde land;" and on the other side, a map of the island portion of Newfoundland and Labrador with an image of a skipper with the words "Celebrating our history - Come join in the fun".

This is not a practice of the Cabot 500 Corporation, nor is it endorsed by the Cabot 500 Corporation.

Thus far, there are no other reports of this activity.

Anyone who is approached to make a donation to Cabot 500 in return for a paper hang tag is urged to report the incident to the police immediately.
