The Scarlet Riders Challenge Grand Finale

On Friday, July 26, Sandra Kelly, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will be attending the SummerActive Scarlet Riders Challenge Grand Finale. Ms. Kelly will present a message of commendation on the SummerActive '96 program which will be addressed to the federal Minister of Health, David C. Dingwall. The message is to be placed in a souvenir saddlebag for the minister, like those designed for, and used by, the riders who participated in the Scarlet Riders Challenge. This saddlebag will also contain similar messages on health and physical activity gathered from various groups, individuals and governments in approximately 400 communities across Canada.

Activities scheduled to take place at the Grand Finale include: a kite festival with kites made by children from the local Boys and Girls Club of Canada; a demonstration of mountain bikes and in-line skates acrobats; and a bike museum coordinated by Tom Sandlin and the St. John's Cycle Club. Presentations will be made to five young representatives of the Mushaua First Nation of Davis Inlet who will accept an appreciation certificate for making the saddlebags. A presentation will also be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Canada who will receive two bicycles donated by Canadian Tire. In addition, an award will be given to the Division "E" cyclist from Victoria, BC who started the Scarlet Riders Challenge with Team BC at the Pacific Ocean on May 3rd.
