February 9, 1996 Annual Arts and Letters Competition Begins
"This competition encourages and stimulates the creative talents of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians," Mr. Grimes said. "Throughout the past 43 years of this program, government has received tens of thousands of submissions. The fact that last year was a record year, indicates that interest in the program is growing." Each applicant is required to submit his/her creative piece to either a senior division or a junior division. The senior division categories are: poetry; fictional prose/short story; nonfictional prose; dramatic script; musical composition; photography; painting and three dimensional art; drawing and graphic art; and multidisciplinary/ collective category. The junior division consist of three categories: prose; poetry; and visual art. The prizes in the senior division (19 years and older) are $600 for a first place finish, $300 for a second, and $100 for a third. The prizes for the junior division (12-18 years old) are $300 for a first place finish, $200 for a second, and $100 for a third. All entries to the competition must be received at the Arts and Letters Office located on the third floor of the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John's by 5 p.m., Friday, March 15, 1996 or postmarked by that date.
