October 30, 1996 Premier Brian Tobin and officials of the Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion will participate in a Flag Remembrance ceremony on November 1 at Confederation Building. The ceremony will commemorate the 51st anniversary of the end of World War II and pay tribute to the memory of those who died in the service of their country in all wars. Royal Canadian Legion Command Remembrance Chair, Bill Titford, said the ceremony will commence at 8:30 a.m. and will feature the traditional March on the Colours and performances by the Singing Legionnaires. The ceremony will also serve as the kick-off for Remembrance Week throughout the province which will be observed from November 1 to November 11. Premier Tobin said Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Flags will be flown during Remembrance Week on provincial buildings in all major centres throughout the province to honour the memory of all those who fought and distinguished themselves in world conflicts. Taylor French, President of the Provincial Command, said almost every home in Newfoundland and Labrador was touched by the tragic losses in these world conflicts. He said the Flag Raising ceremony, together with the Remembrance Week activities, will provide a unique opportunity for the public to remember the courage, devotion and sacrifices of those whose lives were lost in the world wars and the Korean conflict.
