Trade mission planned for Chile On Monday, November 11, Industry, Trade and Technology Minister Chuck Furey will lead a delegation of 10 Newfoundland companies on a trade mission to Chile. Newfoundland companies participating in the mission represent the high tech, forestry, metal fabrication and services sectors and will participate in scheduled meetings with Chilean companies with similar business interests. The trade mission, which ends November 15, follows a visit in August by representatives of Fundacion Chile, a non-profit organization set up by the Chilean government to develop world-wide linkages with private and public sector companies and organizations. During the August visit, Fundacion Chile representatives visited local companies and identified potential opportunities for joint ventures, particularly in the aquaculture, forestry and agri-foods sectors. Mr. Furey said that one of the goals of the mission is to expand on the number of Newfoundland companies presently doing business in Chile. With Chile about to enter into a bilateral free trade agreement with Canada, Newfoundland companies have already recognized the value of pursuing opportunities in Chile. "While there are 10 companies participating in this mission, there are a number of other companies who have already established business connections in Chile. Nautical Data are training individuals from the Chilean Navy, Sea Forest Plantation are working with Fundacion Chile on the commercial viability of a fish- farmed species, and the Canadian Centre for International Fisheries Development will be in the southern part of Chile at the same time our mission is taking place." At the conclusion of the Chile mission, Mr. Furey will travel to Uraguay to meet with officials from Tsakos, the Greek shipping company that has expressed an interest in purchasing the St. John's Dockyard. From there, he will travel to Mexico City where he will join a local company for a contract-signing ceremony with a Mexican company. Mr. Furey said that a great deal of effort has been spent on maintaining costs associated with the mission, including the arrangement of group rates and advance airfare prices for the delegation. Harry Bishop, Director of Business Investment, and John Doody, Director of Communications, will be participating in the mission. Mr. Furey's expenses are estimated to be approximately $6,000. Total cost for the mission is estimated to be approximately $20,000. A copy of the itinerary follows. Contact: John Doody, Director of Communications, (709) 729-0050. -----------------------------
