Joan Marie Aylward, Minister of Social Services, announced today, that Thursday, October 17, will be recognized as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty in Newfoundland and Labrador. The minister said October 17 will be one day to raise our awareness about poverty in this province but added we should all strive everyday to eradicate poverty in our communities.

The minister said government will continue to look for ways to provide people with the means to better their lives but the answer lies in the community. "Government alone can not solve all societal problems," said the minister. "We must work together as individuals and groups to ensure our communities can help eradicate poverty and provide everyone with an equal opportunity for a successful life."

The minister added that government's Strategic Economic Plan is creating an environment which is attracting businesses and creating jobs throughout the province. Likewise, the Strategic Social Plan, which is now in the consultation stage, will allow every person in the province to provide input and help government set the direction of social policy for years to come.

The minister said government provides funding for a number of community groups and initiatives aimed at fighting poverty throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. She hopes by raising public awareness on October 17, everyone will think about the eradication of poverty and contribute to that goal in their own way.
