Mediator to meet with parties regarding strike at Iron Ore Company of Canada

Kevin Aylward, Minister of Environment and Labour, announced today that the provincial mediator from his department has called the United Steelworkers of America, Local 5795 and the Iron Ore Company of Canada back to the table to explore the possibility of finding a settlement to the contract talks and ending the month long strike by more that 1,400 workers at the Iron Ore Company of Canada mine in Labrador City.

These discussions are scheduled to begin in the evening of Monday, May 6.

The mediator has decided that these meetings will take place in St. John's believing that the change in location from Labrador City/Wabush will benefit the discussions.

Contact: Joseph P. O'Neill, Assistant Deputy Minister, (709) 729- 2715.
